Snowboard history goes back several decades. During this time, it has evolved from a board with a rope tied to the nose to a modern sports equipment stuffed with technology.
We will definitely tell the story of snowboarding in another article.
Now we will help you choose your snowboard. Let’s get started.
Размер – ростовка
There are many rules for choosing a board. We are guided by a universal formula. Ideal for beginners, you can use one of two variations of this formula.
1. The easiest – a snowboard, if you put it next to you, should reach the space from the bottom of the chin to the upper lip.
Advantages of the method: Suitable when you do not know your height and weight, it is universal.
2. The exact way – the ideal size is calculated by the formula:
(your height) – 20 cm = your size.
For example, if you are 180 cm tall, a 160 cm snowboard will suit you.
It is important to remember about additional parameters. This is your weight.
It’s a little more complicated here. We need to compare your height and weight.
To do this, subtract 100 cm from the height. Then we compare the values. For example, height 180 cm, weight 76 kg.
We get the following: 180-100 = 80, 80 & gt; 75. If in numerical terms your weight is LESS (in this case 75 is less than 80), it is recommended to take a snowboard 1-5 cm less from the ideal size.
In our case 160 – 5 = 155cm .
If the weight in numerical terms is greater for example 85 kg, i.e. 180-100 = 80.
80 (height) & lt; 85 (weight) it is recommended to purchase a board with an increased size of the same 1-5 cm. 160 + 5 = 165
Pros: You will find the perfect board for yourself.
Cons: you need to know all the exact values of your body.
It’s always important to be aware of exceptions. For freestyle
pick up the boards even less, for the convenience of performing tricks.
For freeriding, on the contrary, slightly longer – for stability in soft snow (off piste)
Ширина сноуборда
Snowboards are produced in several widths. It is very easy to find the right one for you. When standing on the board, the toes and heels of the boots should protrude slightly beyond the edges of the board. As shown in the picture above.

A very important parameter for a snowboard is its stiffness.
There are 3 main groups:
– soft
– universal (medium)
– hard
Soft boards are made mainly for park riding. These are freestyle jumps (trampolines, shapes), jibbing in figures (railings, tables, pipes, etc.)
and for street riding – riding in unprepared city conditions (stair railings, steps, jumps even in your yard)
The softness of the board helps to spring well and jump with sufficient amplitude.
Universal (all mountain) suitable for beginner riders. You haven’t decided yet, you need a stable track board. Your choice of allmountain boards. They swallow bumps, are stable at speed and even allow you to perform the simplest tricks. On them you can try the first freeride and much more.
Rigid – these boards are suitable for freeriding and carving.
In the first case, they allow not to “drown” in the thick snow, to keep the trajectory stably. In the second case (carving), they are very stable at high speeds, you can lay such a strong arc that you will practically lie down on the slope (apart from the board, you also need to learn this kind of riding)
And so: soft – freestyle, medium – for beginners, hard freeride and carving
The degree of stiffness is different for each manufacturer.
